TANUH AI-CoE is please to announce IndiNeuroFM, a joint development with the Centre for Brain Research (CBR) at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), to build a sovereign medical foundation model designed specifically for the Indian population.

IndiNeuroFM aims to develop an India specific multimodal bridge for the human brain, a foundation model trained and calibrated on Indian cohorts and clinical realities, rather than models built with data of other populations.

The Case for a Sovereign Model

Most AI models used in healthcare today are trained on Western data and carry that bias forward into how brains are imaged and diagnosed. But the Indian brain is physiologically distinct, differing in size, ageing trajectory, common disease patterns, and nutrient deficiency signatures from what global models are calibrated to recognize. With a younger population too, India needs a population-specific model built for its own biological and clinical context.

A Joint Development Built on Complementary Strengths

IndiNeuroFM is a strategic joint development that brings together two distinct and complementary capabilities. CBR contributes its deep expertise in Indian cohorts, longitudinal neuroscience data, and clinical research at scale. TANUH AI-CoE contributes its AI excellence in building and deploying foundation models for healthcare.

Independently, each capability is valuable. Together, they are intended to be transformative, in the spirit of one plus one made greater than two.

“IndiNeuroFM is the outcome of a strategic partnership between the Centre for Brain Research (CBR) and TANUH: AI-CoE in Healthcare at IISc to bridge multi-centric, deeply phenotyped longitudinal aging cohorts with advanced machine learning. This India-specific medical foundation model is designed to eliminate existing algorithmic bias and establish an equitable digital public infrastructure (DPI) for neuro-diagnostics in the country.” - Prof. Govindan Rangarajan, Director, IISc

“Since its inception, CBR has been committed to building comprehensive longitudinal cohorts on aging and brain health. IndiNeuroFM represents the natural next step - bringing that rich scientific resource together with cutting-edge AI to create a model that truly reflects the Indian context. We envision this as an investment in the long-term diagnostic and scientific sovereignty of the country.” - Prof. K.V.S. Hari, Director, Centre for Brain Research (CBR) at IISc
