Overview

Overview
India faces an urgent mental health crisis with a severe shortage of professionals—approximately one psychiatrist and 0.07 psychologists per 100,000 people. AI solutions, particularly large language models (LLMs), conversational AI, and multimodal analytics, can transform diagnostics, monitoring, and early intervention.
Our goal is to develop safe, explainable, and culturally aligned AI tools that empower frontline health workers, clinicians, and communities to detect and manage common mental disorders (CMDs) at scale.

Our Goal

AI Solutions for Mental Health aims to develop an AI-enabled mobile tool to help community health workers (ASHAs and ANMs) screen for depression, anxiety, substance use, and cognitive impairment. Using simple questionnaires along with voice and video inputs, the app provides automated risk assessments and referral recommendations.
The study will be tested across rural and urban sites in India to evaluate clinical accuracy and real-world usability, using psychiatrist-confirmed diagnoses as the benchmark.
Designed to be offline-first and multilingual, the tool enables early identification and timely care, helping close the mental health treatment gap in India.
